The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) are promoting October as National Window Covering Safety Month. According to the CPSC, approximately 200 infants and young children have died since 1990 from accidents involving window cords. Accidental strangulation occurs in older window treatments or in treatements with loose cords. Homeowners are encouraged to replace older window coverings with cords manufactured before 2001 with newer, safer products. Additionally, cordless window coverings should be used in infants and children's bedrooms and play areas. Cribs should never be placed near windows. To retrofit and repair older window coverings, download instructions to retrofit and fix old shade cords. |
