How to Measure for Window Treatments

Window treatments can be inside mounted or outside mounted. An inside mount is when the valance, shade, or blind is mounted
inside the window frame, next to the glass. An outside mount is when the window treatment is mounted outside the window
frame. Picking which way to mount window treatments will depend on the depth of your windows and the style of window
treatment chosen.

Window treatments often have several layers. The privacy layer is first-this is a shade, blind, or shutter to block the view from the
window and to control light. Panels can be functional for a combination of looks and privacy-or they can be stationary and
decorative. A valance or cornice can then tops off all the layers. Cornices are especially useful to block window drafts. The
number of layers used depends upon personal preference and the final look desired.

When measuring windows it is important to determine if the window is square. Measure from corner to corner, making an X. If
the 2 measurements differ by more than ½", then consider using an outside mount shade instead of an inside mount.

Measuring Tips:

* Use a metal ¾" or 1" wide tape measure (not a cloth tape measure)
* Check that the window is square by measuring on the diagonal
* Measure in 3 places horizontally (top, middle, bottom) and 3 places vertically (left side, middle, right side) and use the smallest
number
