Window-Treatments
What Is a Custom Drapery Workroom ?

A custom drapery workroom is the business where curtains, drapes, valances, shades, and soft window coverings are fabricated
and created. Specialized sewing machines, such as blind hemmers, sergers, pleat tackers, and industrial sewing machines are
used to professionally sew window treatments. Other equipment, such as large work tables, air compressors, air tools, and tag
guns, let workroom professionals work quickly and efficiently on large projects, such as over sized drapery panels or cornices.
Workrooms also use professional drapery patterns or create their own patterns, incorporating professional details into the
window coverings. All seams should be enclosed or hidden, and hems should be neat and even.

Custom drapery workrooms can be any size, from a single person workroom to a large national workroom. They may do retail
work, wholesale work, or both. Wholesale workrooms work with designers and decorators. Retail workrooms work directly with
the homeowner to create window coverings and soft furnishings, such as pillows, cushions, bed duvet covers, comforters, table
runners, chandelier chain covers, and any home dec item that can be made from fabric. Workrooms may also sell fabric, window
treatment rods, rod finials, and hardware. They may sell shades, blinds, plantation shutter, cellular shades, and other hard
window coverings.

Custom window treatments should be professionally installed, in order to look their best. Your workroom or designer will install
the finished window coverings themselves, or they may hire an installer to do so. The final treatment should be securely attached
to the wall (or ceiling), have even hemlines, and be well dressed. Lining should not peek out from under the face fabric.

The two biggest determinants of the finished quality of your window treatments will be the custom drapery workroom and the
fabrics -- do not skimp in either of these areas. Fabrics do not have to be ridiculously expensive, but choosing inexpensive face
fabrics may result in the fabric having misprints or weaving problems. The price difference between a budget lining and a quality
lining is not that much, and choosing a quality lining and interlining will result in a window covering that will last longer and hang
better. The same is true of a quality custom workroom -- it takes time to produce a quality window treatment, pillow, cushion,
bedding, or other soft furnishing.
